Know the exact sale that puts you in profit
Every business has a magic number: the unit sale where revenue finally covers every cost. This break even calculator finds it from three inputs - your total fixed costs, your selling price, and your variable cost per unit - and shows both the break-even units and the break-even revenue.
The units-vs-profit table underneath shows the whole journey: how deep the loss is at half volume, the exact zero point, and how profit grows at 125%, 150% and 200% of break-even. Use it before a launch, a hire or a price change to see whether the plan can work at all.
How is the break-even point calculated?
Divide your total fixed costs by the contribution margin per unit (selling price minus variable cost per unit). The result is the number of units you must sell before profit starts.
What counts as a fixed vs variable cost?
Fixed costs stay the same whether you sell one unit or a thousand: rent, salaries, software. Variable costs scale with each unit: materials, packaging, shipping and transaction fees.
